Ross has gained a great mate – Peter Jeffs who worked at ‘One Oak’ for the past 15 years and has now joined the staff here at Willandra. Peter’s whole of life farming background is a tremendous help to Ross.
Ram weaners have been fleeced weighed. ‘Willandra Desmond’ and his half-brother ‘The Big Fella’ were the sires that had progeny well above the average. Two of Desmond’s sons cut way above the average – you would have no difficulty in picking them out.
The 2015 embryo transfer lambs are on the ground. Donor ewes include: One Oak ewe Lot 4, purchased for $12,000 and ‘One Oak’ ewe Lot 36 with a ‘White River’ background purchased for $1,400. Sire of these lambs being Desmond.
Willandra is a family owned business with a long history of success. The original Willandra Merino Stud was established west of Hillston, NSW, in 1886 and was based on Wanganella F. No. 83 and Tasmanian bloodlines believed to be from Belle Vue.
In 1974, the Willandra Stud was purchased by the Wells family and moved to Jerilderie where they have proudly continued the tradition of breeding hardy, well-balanced fertile sheep carrying big fleeces of quality wool. Keeping abreast of current marketing and production trends and continuing to develop and improve the modern Willandra Merino bloodstock is of paramount importance.
