20th Annual John Wells Memorial Sheep Sale – Willandra Sells Top Pen

Trent and Zak Gooden, Yirdeen Farms, Lockhart, paid $385 beating off strong competition. They were repeat buyers having purchased the top line of Willandra ewes the previous year. Second top price for the day was $338 paid for the top line of 17-18 month old Sleigh Pastoral Co., Willandra blood, maiden ewes.

The Gooden’s had been very happy with the Willandra ewes they had purchased the year before mentioning that they had cut just over 6kg of wool for six months growth. This year’s pen of Willandra ewes were the heaviest in the yards averaging 70.9kg live.

Willandra is a family owned business with a long history of success. The original Willandra Merino Stud was established west of Hillston, NSW, in 1886 and was based on Wanganella F. No. 83 and Tasmanian bloodlines believed to be from Belle Vue.

In 1974, the Willandra Stud was purchased by the Wells family and moved to Jerilderie where they have proudly continued the tradition of breeding hardy, well-balanced fertile sheep carrying big fleeces of quality wool. Keeping abreast of current marketing and production trends and continuing to develop and improve the modern Willandra Merino bloodstock is of paramount importance.
